After two years, Dr. Hartley finally shows up. He's tired and creaky, but he wants to talk to his sister. He wants to know what happened in Northbrook five years ago, and what similarities there are between the two cases. He says he has a lot of followers, so he needs to speak to them every three months. He also wants to make sure that his sister's family is protected, because many of his followers are blaming her for his arrest. The sheriff interrupts, saying that he's negotiating with him. He doesn't want to give details about the case, but says he'll talk to him about it. Dr. hartley says that he has no choice, because he needs the protection of his sister and his family, too. He tells the sheriff that he can't provide any details of the case because he has so many followers. He asks the sheriff to come to see him every 3 months, and the sheriff says that's fine, but that he might not be able to give him any details. The doctor says he needs more time, and he wants the sheriff's protection, too, so that his followers don't blame him for the crime. He adds that many of them are blaming his sister for the arrest, which is a coincidence, since she already knew about
