About This Chapter
It's bedtime, and the narrator tells us that he's going to take his grandfather to the hospital the next day for a check-up. The doctor tells him that there are two kinds of treatment for his grandpa's osteosarcoma : conservative treatment in the hospital, or amputation. The conservative treatment will cure the tumor, but it will only last for three to five years, while the amputation will cure him for the rest of his life. If you choose the conservative treatment, he'll only have three to six years to live. The costs of the amputation are also high. The narrator asks the doctor if it's okay with him that she's doing this, but the doctor points out that he still saw that she wasn't disappointed in him. He still wanted to be independent, and she showed him what she wanted to see. She tells the doctor that she doesn't have the strength to be an independent person, so she'll have to rely on others for help when she needs it.
