When Ansheng reads the letter, he is "calm yet sorrowful" . He tells the narrator that when he was a young child, both his parents died of illnesses. He and Ansheng were engaged, but they did not get married. When the narrator asked him when he got his memories back, he said that he had already regained his memories long ago. The narrator does not know how deeply this affects his mother, but she seems to have waited a long time for this day. He says that since he was born, his father has cherished him every time he mentions to her. He looks even now "i still cant believe" that his father would leave them. He asks her to find someone who can take care of her alone in the city. She reminds him that "those men in glasses" may look decent, but that they are often crafty. She asks him to leave immediately.
