It's been a while since we've heard from the narrator, but he tells us that he's lucky to have gotten out of the way of Lax's advances. He says that if he had stayed with Lax, he'd be stuck with him for the rest of his life. Lax seems like a good guy, he says, but that doesn't mean that he loves anyone. He's just too far gone to be worth the risk of falling in love with someone without reservation. If you fall in love without reservation, you're going to lose yourself, he warns us.
