This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which we learn that the lin family has been spying on the Quins. The narrator tells us that this spying has been going on for a long time, and that the two families have been in constant communication with each other. The lins have been using this spying as a way to keep tabs on their son, Quin, and their son's friend, Siang. Siang has been keeping an eye on Quin's whereabouts, but he has not told Quin about it. Quin tells Siang that he has installed a tracking device on him, and Siang tells him to check it out. He tells Quin that the police will soon arrive, and Quin threatens to kill Siang if he doesn't hand over Siang to the authorities. He also threatens to declare war on Siang's family if Siang refuses to hand over his son. The two men argue, with Siang accusing Quin of being reckless, while Quin accuses Siang of trying to protect himself by blocking the gun that Siang was using to shoot him. The men argue more, until Quin finally calms them down.
