About This Chapter
The next morning, the two young lovers are alone in the hovel, and the narrator tells Ganymede that he should come back with him. He says that he will sleep in his room and that Ganyeman will be the one who will take care of him. The narrator says that the young lovers have lost their parents and their courage to divorce, and that he has to take them away to look after themselves. He is worried that she will not be able to care for herself, because she had sex with a man when she was back in college, and they had sex again when she came back to college. He thinks that marriage is a trade, that she is not good enough to be married, because her beauty is faded, her salary is pathetic, and she has no living skills. He feels that he is nothing like her, because he is her mentor, and because the love he feels for her cannot possibly go deeper than that. The two are interrupted by the news that Lu, the butler who helped them when they were younger, has died. The young lovers say that they will have to return to the city the next day.
