The flashback shows that the two men were in the middle of the fight when the other man stabbed him in the back. The other man, who is now known as "the bastard," was the one who stabbed him. The bastard tries to explain that the fight was a mistake and that he is sorry for hurting the man. The narrator then tells the audience that the incident was settled, and that it is too early for the bastard to say such a thing.
