The narrator tells us that she's been waiting for her first boyfriend for a long time. He's an odd duck, she says, because he asks a girl out on the same day that he's already met her. She tells him to be careful with his dating, because she doesn't want to fall in love with him. He tells her to eat up before the weather starts to get cold, and she says she'll do her best to earn his love. She's not handing over her hotaru to him, though. She wants to do what she can to earn him her love. The narrator says he'll see her the next day, and they'll have fun together. He asks her to pat him on the back after class so he won't have to do anything in return, and the narrator says that's fine, but she still feels like they're leaving it in his court. She asks him to think of something to do for her, and he tells her that it's all beginner luck. She wonders if he will be surprised when she sees her waiting for him, and asks him if he'd be happy to see her smile, too.
