While Masaki is still married to his first wife, the narrator tells us, he doesn't really suffer from the pain of being separated from her. He just wants to hear the good news that he's not going to get a divorce. Masaki's mother comes to see him, and he tells her that he hasn't even thought about getting a divorce yet. He says that his mother should have asked him sooner because he married a woman who couldn't have a child, and that's why they didn't ask him sooner. The narrator says that they should have waited until Masaki was 30 to ask him for a divorce, but Masaki ended up marrying the woman who could've had a child anyway. So they're going to have to find another woman to take his place.
