This chapter opens with a flashback to a conversation between the Governess and Teta Elam. The Governess is worried about how she will respond to Teta's letter. She's worried that she's not strong enough to respond to the letter, and that Teta is too young and inexperienced to handle the situation. She also worries that she doesn't have enough strength in her body to handle such a sensitive matter as the letter.
