This chapter opens with a soliloquy by Soji, in which he compares himself to a "sugi" . He says that he loves his moles, but his heart is under his right, and that he is the exact opposite of them. He tells Soji that he feels like the world has changed and that they should do their best together. Soji tells him to come to Coquelicot as often as he cheers at night. He asks if he can make her drink some ice tea, and she says yes. He then asks if she is his new girlfriend. She says she is not, and he says he is half-done with high school and wants to go to college. She tells him that she is used to this kind of thing, since she can't go anywhere on her own, but she says that she was able to do so because of the food at Coquilocote. She feels like she can change when she comes to Coquiliocote, because she is able to be like a soul, but not like a man.
