This chapter opens with a soliloquy by a young woman named Ohmita, who has just returned from a trip to Coquelicot. She tells us that her lover, a man named Soji Hibiya, has found out about her trip and has turned her into a "mache" . Ohmita asks her companion, Miss Jessel, to come with her to lunch at the restaurant where she works. The young woman tells her that the restaurant's lunch set is made by a woman named Umiya, and that Umiya is the one who makes the lunches for the women who are drunk and have gotten into trouble. Umiya confesses that she loves the restaurant and that she comes for lunch every day. She says that she has a dream to open her own restaurant someday, and she tells her companion that she is so happy that she can't imagine life without her. Oh, and Umiya's name is ohmiya, which means "gentle" or "girl." Umiya says that he is 20 years old and that he has mixed feelings about his age. He says that his name doesn't mean anything to him because he is a "gentleman" and a "girl" , and he has no idea what his name means. Oh yeah, Umiya also says that there is a rain kanji in his drink, but that there isn't much in the way of rain in the English language. Oh yes, umiya has a mole under his left eye.
