The chapter opens with a conversation between the Governess and her servant. The Governess tells the servant that she is going to call on the Crown Prince and be absent. She tells him that she does not have to go to the prince's house because she is not required to do so. She says that she has been feeling tired lately and that she will get up now. She explains that the work she is doing is to take the prince to the Ministry of War to steal a nautical chart. She wants to go shopping first so that the prince will have time to enjoy himself. The servant tells her that he has to wait for the shopping to be over so that he will not be tempted to buy anything that he does not need. The prince is overjoyed to be able to haggle with the shopkeepers at every store. He buys everything he can find in the market. He is disappointed when he finds that there are many things that he cannot buy in the palace. He asks the servant to accept the gifts as his own, but the servant says that a slave cannot be compared to a master. He says that the servant is just as lively and active as the prince. He tells her to take a break and that they are all tired.
