About This Chapter
In this short scene, King Jarl and his son, Jarl, discuss the recent events in their village. Jarl laments the fact that the "norse" have captured his mother and killed her. He tells Jarl that he will feel death growing within him as a result of the capture and killing of his mother. He asks Jarl's sister to wake him up so that he can take action against the norse. The two men agree that they will take the "channel" that separates their village from the "Skagerrak" and the "kattegat." Jarl tells his father that he has seen another boat in the same channel, and Jarl wonders if it is the same boat as the one that attacked the village earlier. He then asks Jarls permission to take a shot at the "Norse" and to keep the shot a secret. Jarls father tells him that he cannot remember exactly where his village is located, but he remembers that the village was full of the "smell of offerings." Jarls mother was a "troll" who was captured by the "nos" and gave birth to Jarls son. When Jarls asks his father to give him some vegetables, Jarls replies that he should not insult the village chief by giving him the vegetables, as the chief might take offense. He also tells Jarls that his favorite fish is the pike, and that only one man has managed to escape the "monster" by using the "magic conch" .
