About This Chapter
The witch of the South seville tells Bjornjeldur that they need to get out of the harbor by nightfall. She tells him that the old man probably wanted them to live so they wouldn't have to marry his daughter. The old man is probably lying, she says, because he probably thought he was lying when he said he was going to let them live. The witch says they should wait until dawn to weigh the anchor and then bring the beast aboard the ship. She says that the beast will drive the men to madness. The captain says he doesn't know what she's talking about, but she says she'll come to her soon. He tells her to come to him, the eastern princess. He says he needs to know what's wrong with her. He asks her why she hasn't waited on his chest for the beast to show up. He also asks her if the beast has ever worn the symbol ansuz, which is a symbol of the gods associated with the land of Asgard. He explains that the symbol is impossible, but only odin has been chosen to bear it. If the beast shows up at the harbor, he's going to fly into a fury that will cause the sea to quake. He warns the young girl to go away and play with her friends. She's too young to be among the norse men. She asks him if he'd like her to turn the beast into a crab to feed to the children.
