About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's looking forward to his wedding night. He wants to see the heads of the people on the island stuck together. He also wants to know if there's anything he can do to get rid of them. He's got a message for Gunter: if he breaks his word, he'll kill him. Gunter's a liar, he says, and if he doesn't honor the deal, it's not a good sign. The narrator reminds Gunter that he and the sirens share the same blood as men, and that they'll show him the same monsters. He tells Gunter to look at him with the blood of the demons, and then he tells him to listen to his daughter, who's been crying for a long time because she was abandoned by her father on the shores of the norse. He asks her why she's crying, and she tells him that she was just a little girl when they found her. She says that she hasn't missed her since then, and Gunter should know that. He says that he wasn't just a kid, but a warrior, and a brave one at that. The story of the series takes place in the ninth century, around the time of the viking invasion of the North Sea. The North Sea is divided among nine different tribes of sirens. Each tribe is descended from a mermaid, and each tribe has a specific gift or power that it uses to rule the sea. The male half of each tribe hates humans, and the female half hates humans. The rulers of the sea and their
