In this scene, Miss Betsey tries to defend herself against the scheming scheming princess. She tells Bell that she used to love Lord Jin, but that she has to break off her marriage to him because she knows that he is plotting against her. Bell tells her that she needs to know who her boss is, and she says that she knows she is wrong, but she wants to know why she should blame her mother for her predicament. She says that her mother was worried because she was worried about her, and so why should she blame her.
