He says that Mamie is only 18 and that he has already agreed to let her marry. Mamie wants to know if Mamie and Dad are serious about getting married, and he says that they are. He promises Mamie that he will graduate from college, and Mamie begs him not to make her "a child" . The narrator says that he is kind of sad about this, but he promises to do his best to make Mamie happy. He asks his mom and dad to keep an eye on Mamie's and Dad's happiness.
