It's been a while since the scene was last seen, and the narrator is still trying to figure out what's going on. He hears that the ghost is trying to bring back her dead husband, and he's worried that she's crazy. He's also worried that the village idiots are going to kill her. The narrator is all, "I'm sorry, I'm late" . He wants to marry her, but he can't get her to agree to marry him. She'll turn the village into hell, he says, and then she'll be a ghost. He promises to protect her if there's someone else who has been affected by the witch's madness.
