About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he doesn't think it'll be enough to win the lottery. He's here with his dad, and he's worried that the pipe is a bad place to be. He wants to get out, but he can't find a goat to trade for one. He also wants to know how he came to be in this place. He tells his dad that he didn't want to come out of the pipe without a reason, so he asked his mom to join him. She agreed, and the two of them went down to the pipe together. The narrator wants to leave, but his dad won't let him. He says that if his dad had apologized for what he did, everything would have been over. Now that he has won the lottery, he wants to go home. He asks his mom what happened, and she tells him that her husband is cheating on her, and that he looks exactly like his son. She says that she looks like she's lost twenty-five pounds. She also tells her mom that she has gained another five pounds, and her dad has been hit by a beam of light, which made him look like a criminal. She asks her mom to get away from the pipe, because she wants to be like her son, like a "worn down guy" like her dad. She's glad that her secret is out, because her dad was always in front of her nose. She wonders if her dad hated her for years, and if he separated her from her brother on purpose. Her hands are "like new" , she says, but she'll never call him dad.
