The nosebleeds aren't because they stayed up studying, but because the temperature in the room is super-hot, and they need to take a shower. The two decide that it's more important for them to get back to school than to stay up late studying. They both realize that they don't have the same intelligence as the other students, and that they have to fight harder to get into college than they did before. They argue about whether or not they should stay in school all the time, or whether they should go directly to the university. The narrator says that he's already decided that he wants to go to college, so he'll just rely on his own efforts.
