About This Chapter
The narrator complains to Mr. Minsheng that he has been badgering him about the family's good treatment of him, and that he finally has to take the risk. He compares the ruby jewel that Minsheng gave him to the one he bought from his father, and tells him that he can't compare with the gift from Madame Furlan. She sent over a lot of things, but the family has a silly girl, and it would be better for the child in the country. The narrator says that he deserved the gift as his greatest hero, and the family will reward him with a large house of his own. He tells the narrator that he's also a "miss of the family" , and he compares himself to the gift-giver. He says that when he got married, the family gave him gifts that could last up to three weddings, and she even lost some of them. If the family treated him the same way, he would have given him the money to stay alone. He feels disgusted when he sees the family and feels like he is being cheated by a " stinky brat" like Minsheng. He asks Minsheng if he can go to the house to see if he is satisfied with it, and Minsheng says that they will pack some things up and meet him there.
