In this chapter, we learn that Nemo's father, Bud Waterston, committed suicide by hanging himself in front of Nemo. Nemo asks Bud why Bud doesn't want to play for the team, and Bud tells him that Bud's dad was a big fan of baseball, but that Bud shot himself in the back of the head because he didn't like the way that Bud played. Bud tells Nemo that he and Bud are "perverted" and that they're not good enough to play in the upper-class division of the school. Bud asks if Nemo is getting "friendly" with his "ass," and Nemo replies that he's not getting friendly with his ass.
