This chapter opens on a hill in the middle of the schoolyard. It's raining, and the boys are complaining about it. They've just finished a race in which they've won a bunch of awards, and they're bummed that they didn't make it to the top of the podium. The boys are bummed because they think they'll have to ride a bike to the finish line, but the teacher assures them that it's going to be okay. The teacher also tells them that the other boys in the class are starting to race against each other, and that's a good thing because it makes them feel better about themselves.
