More bodies are found in the city, and the police are using cctv to track down the killer. The narrator says that he wishes he were the one who wrote the article, because he would have liked to have seen the doctor's face in the newspaper. The doctor was a good man, he says, but he was a bad person. Van says that if the doctor were alive, he would notice that the narrator is mourning, and he would kill him before he changes his mind. Van tells the narrator that the doctor is asleep, and that he will not notice if the narrator kills him now. Van asks the narrator if he is sure that he would not have killed the doctor if he had known what he was about to do. Van replies that he is curious how the story ends.
