He's bummed that he took the first prize in a competition to see which one of the fireflies could attract the prettiest girl in the world . The narrator thanks the narrator for all his hard work, and thanks the hotel for letting him stay there. He tells the narrator that the fireflies are so tiny that they're just trying to woo him. He also tells her that the first place winner in the competition could get a job offer in a big city after graduation. Sounds like a good idea, right?
