In this chapter, we learn that the young man is studying sculpture at the municipal university. He has just won a second place in a competition in which he is competing against other young artists from the same city. The young man tells his tutor, who is also studying sculpture, that the second place makes the young woman upset. He tells the tutor that she is afraid that she will not be able to get a job in the city after graduating because she is too focused on the competition. The tutor tells him that he should know himself better because he has won many competitions in the past, including one at his senior high school. He says that he wants to prove to his mother that he does not need her to help him plan his life. He feels terrible when he realizes that he did not win the competition and that he has disappointed everyone around him. He asks the tutor to bring him a new pair of headphones so that he can use them while he is away at the summer camp.
