When the narrator returns to the dormitory, he finds that it is now the first day of winter, and that the girls have been there for only a few days. He asks her why she is avoiding him, and she tells him that she was one of the students who visited the school. He feels that she is intentionally avoiding him because she wants to know why he did not find her work. He tells her that the temperature in his hometown is too cold for the snow to melt for days, so he does not think that they can live on the memory of the first snowfall. He says that a snowman is supposed to melt sooner than later, and if they keep him in their minds, he will be with them forever. The narrator says that the final death in a relationship is when no one remembers that they loved each other once. In a relationship, he says, once loved the one he loves is enough, no matter what the ending, and as long as he has loved the other, he is still in love with him forever.
