Back in New York City, Sam is thrilled to be back. He's been waiting two years for a cure, and he's finally gotten it. He asks if he can call his parents right away, but they're too busy to answer his questions. He also asks if his paras will protect him from the side effects of his use of them, and they say they'll send someone to see him. They're not sure what to make of him, though, because everyone is so sorry for him. He tells them that he looks seventy years old, and that medical science has "worked miracles" on his body. He doesn't think anything has changed. He imagines that his mom is dead and that his grandmother has waited for him all these years. He wants to take her in his arms and kiss her, but he can't, because his mom has already killed herself.
