About This Chapter
Before the cameras, Sam and Laurie used to go to the drugstore and take the rolls of film they took to the doctor's office. They used to get stoned on the grass they stole from Sam's brother, Larry, and they used to tease each other about it. Now, they're going to live together in the same house, and Laurie is going to stay with her cousin in Santa Clara. Sam says he's not going to be able to talk to his parents every night, because he has a nosebleed. He's moving in with Laurie, so he'll have to stay up all night talking to them. Laurie says he doesn't have to worry about his mom, because she'll be staying with her new boyfriend, who's named Henry raven. The doctor explains that the nosebleed is caused by a South Korean adolescent retrovirus, which attacks the same kind of cell that causes cancer in adults. In other words, the South Korean retrovirus attacks one specific type of cell, like the one Sam has. The only reason they've found out about this is because Sam and the other kids have become sick with this particular strain of the retrovirus. It's tragic, the doctor says, because the only way to cure these kids is to cure them all.
