In this short scene, Gulliver tries to impress Lady Dedlock by pretending that he is not a crook. He also pretends to be delighted to have her back in his house. He tells her that he thought she would be with her father in the town, and that he was certain that she would return to her father's side of the family. He asks her to lead him down the river to the underworld, where they will find the bodies of the dead.
