The chapter opens with a prologue, in which the narrator tells the audience that the story is set in the "earthlight colony" on the moon. He asks the audience if they would like to see Jacques and Lamar experiment with the lunar telescope. Jacques says that he would love to see them, but that they are not supposed to be there. He tells Lamar to stand watch, but Lamar says he will stay out of the way. The narrator tells us that he wishes someone would come out to check on them, so that he could watch Jacques run and hide. He also tells us about the two young men who were deported from the moon two years ago. He says that the parents of one of the young men are back on earth, and that his mom is already taking him back to earth. Jacques tells the narrator that he is worried about the young man, because his parents are already back on Earth. He adds that he will get Jacques back later.
