In this chapter, we learn that it has been 25 years since the cat and his litter were first brought to Kitty's care. They have been living in a barn, and Kitty has been unable to find their mother, who has not been seen for a few days. She has decided to take care of the kittens until someone decides to adopt them. She notices that the kitten is eating heartily with "big eyes wide open" , and wonders why the despicable man has suddenly appeared in her mind.
