The chapter opens with a flashback to Tim's first day at the university. He's in the cafeteria talking to his friend, Noémie, when he hears a loud noise coming from the fourth floor of the hospital. He realizes that the hospital is in the middle of an epidemic, and that he and his friend need to get out of the building immediately. They're running out of protective suits, so they're going to have to sneak into the basement to save the babies. They don't know how to get there, but they've got a lock-knive that they can use to control the noise. Tim says he's lucky that the lock knife is an older one, because he'd probably be called a coward if he didn't use it. Noemie says she's worried about her father, who's been out hunting for the undead all day. She doesn't have a cell phone, so she can't communicate with her family. Tim is worried that his father might be killed by the undead, but he'll still be hunting for them anyway. He wants to make sure that no one gets hurt, so he calls his brother, Allen, and tells him to stay out of his way. Allen says that it'll be okay to go outside of his comfort zone, but not to call his brother.
