In this chapter, we learn that Sophie's father still cares about his daughter, even though she's grown up in a modern world. This is the first time that we've seen that, so we're not sure what's wrong with her logic. But she does have a plan: she'll wake the guy up first so that he can do his job. She can use the opportunity to throw an item that will make the pain worse. Just in case she doesn't learn her lesson, she says, and defy another task, she can smell the item. The blue item will smell like seawater, and the red one will be like chili peppers. She says she can't do the wrong thing, so she has to use the right one, or there'll be consequences.
