About This Chapter
Even though he knows he doesn't need money anymore, Willet still makes him happy. He's also his friend, and he wants to be his best friend. He asks his father if he should quit his job and write a letter to Willet telling him to get a job. The duke says he's helping him by telling Willet to become unemployed. The duchess says she's worried about Willet because she knows he'll be gossiped about, and she wants her family not to be caught up in gossips. She tells the duke that when Willet first came to live with them, he seemed like a confi-dent, but she knew that he was hiding his complicated feelings about the family. He was still afraid that the family wouldn't take him in, and even his mother ran away from the house without saying goodbye. She asks the duke why he hasn't done more to help Willet, and the duke says it's because Willet's highness is more important to him than his father's absence. He then asks the duchess if she remembers what happened to her when she woke up from her dream. She says she heard someone call the doctor, and then she lost consciousness and was suddenly "entrapped by darkness" .
