About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a conversation between a young man named San and a middle-aged woman named Shimizu. The young man, who works in the kitchen in the industrial machinery factory, has just discovered that the woman he works for is a comic artist. The woman, named Maekawa, is a friend of the young man's, and the two of them have been talking about the comic he has been working on. When the young woman asks why he is there, the man replies that he was there because the upper-class man forbade him from talking to her about what they had gotten up to that night. The two men discuss the comic, which is about a girl named Yuri who is in love with a man named Tomoyuki, and they decide that they will lend the comic to each other as soon as they return from work. When they are alone, the young men discuss how they have never met anyone with the same tastes as Yuri, and that they are suspicious of people who accept their hobbies so easily. They decide to buy some food to share with each other, and then they decide to stop talking to Yuri. When she asks him to stop, he says that he does not care about women, but he does like the comics he has drawn. He tells her that he will be participating in an exhibition of his work, and she says that she would like to come.
