About This Chapter
The next day, the two of them go for a drive. The narrator complains that he doesn't get to drive as often as he'd like. He's jealous of the other man's freedom to do whatever he wants with his life. He tells the girl not to act like she's planning on taking him out to eat. He also tells her not to expect things from other people. The girl says that she used to work as a bookseller when she was in college. She tells the narrator not to worry, because she'll always be able to rely on her flying cross when the times are tough. She also tells him not to be afraid of being hit on, because it's never happened to her. The two go off to buy some more books. When they get back, the girl is there with a receipt for the books they ordered. She's surprised to see that the narrator is the one who bought the books. He says that he's going to check out the books again. He thanks the girl for giving him stories about characters who can accept their flaws. He hopes that someday, something good happens between them.
