About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to a dream in which the narrator is waiting for his wife, who has fallen asleep in the middle of a conversation with her husband. The two of them are in Singapore, and the narrator asks his wife to get dressed quickly so that they can go for a walk in the botanical garden. He asks her to choose between a simple ring and a fancy one, and she chooses the simple one. She then asks him to choose a bracelet, and he chooses a bracelet that is colorful, with diamonds, that he would wear on his bracelet. He then asks her if she would like to try the bracelet on. She says that she would, but that the price of the bracelet is too high for her. The narrator then asks if she is in love with the man and she replies that she is, and that she hopes he is not. He tells her that he hopes she is not, because when a man is rejected, he will be willing to go on a date with the first woman to say she likes him.
