About This Chapter
The scene opens on the 43rd floor of New York's Central Park. It's a beautiful day, and a young man named Jonathan Harker is basking in the view. He's just returned from a business trip, where he met an architect who'd won an award for his services to the community. The young man is nervous about meeting the architect, but he's also excited about the opportunity to dress up as the architect's wife. He tells the young man that the architect kept badgering him to introduce the architect to him, and that the party is being held to honor the architect for his work. Jonathan is a little nervous about the whole thing, because he doesn't want to be seen as a "jobless beggar" . The man is impressed by Jonathan's new dress, and he asks if Jonathan is married to someone he knows. Jonathan tells him that he and the architect worked together at the reception desk at the apartment building where Jonathan works. The two of them have gotten along well, and Jonathan is happy that he seems to be telling the truth. He says that he thought Jonathan was cute before, but now that he looks like a "knock-out" , it's hard to believe that he'd ever been so nice to the man. Jonathan feels sorry for the man, who he thinks is trying to be a seductress. He asks if the man is tanaka, and the man says that they used to work together, and they got along well back then. Jonathan thinks that the man must have been a hooker, but the man denies it, saying that he never thought the man would ever do such a thing.
