About This Chapter
In this short scene, the architect and his new wife discuss their marriage plans. The couple is renting a room in a fancy hotel in the city of Ishikawa, a prefecture in northeastern Japan, where they have been living together for the past six years. The architect tells his wife that he is renting the room because he cannot afford the rent alone. He tells her that he has been back to the city recently for the New Year's celebration, and that he hopes to be back soon. He says that he would like to meet with the architect's friends, but that his wife would be better suited to his job as an architect. He adds that it is time for him to "pull himself together," but that a real wife will be more effective. The maid leaves, and the architect is pleased to find that she has forgotten her cardigan. He asks the maid to dress for the occasion, and she agrees. The new wing of the hotel has just been completed, and he wants to cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the new space. He apologizes for starting the story of his marriage with a personal note, but he says that the wedding was planned as a wedding feature.
