This chapter opens with a soliloquy by a young man named Perrier. The young man tells his fiancee, Viola, that he has been fired from his job as a bartender at a bar in Viola's hometown. Viola is angry that she has been ignored by her boss, Stephina, and that she is being exploited by the "talent farm" . She tells the young man that she hopes he and Viola can look back on their time together and laugh together.
