This chapter opens with a description of the aquarium, which is described as a "seafood restaurant" . The narrator comments that the fish in the aquarium are "meaningless" and that they are being eaten anyway. The old man is injured and panting, and the narrator decides to go and find out what is going on. He finds that the old man has a "miasma" around his body, and that the man is trying to kill witnesses as well. He realizes that he is the "power" of the sea, and wonders why the man wants to kill him. The man thanks the narrator for saving his life, and tells him that he and his girlfriend are staying at a nearby hotel.
