About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that Mikuri got laid off from her job as a maid, and that she had to go back to school to find a job. Mikuri was able to find work as a temp, and she's happy to be back at work. She's excited about the prospect of running away with Mikuri. She tells the narrator that she just got married, and the night before, she was the one who was doing all the work. The narrator wonders what it was like to sleep in a bed surrounded by the smell of her new husband's house, and wonders if she had a dream about Mikuri's new husband. She wonders if it's okay if Mikuri resigns and marries someone else, and then she'll be alone for a while. She says that she'd like to run into Mikuri again, but she doesn't know what to do with her rice cooker. She wants to try cooking it in the clay pot, and Mikuri says that's a good idea, too, because rice cookers are popular overseas. She also says that globalization is like selling her job overseas just so she can buy cheap things. She adds that she would like to do that someday, but that she can't invite her co-worker's wife, Hisarama, out for coffee, because he's "tall and good looking" . She thinks that he is a "lady killer" , and says that he always comments on her cooking. She hopes that someone will someday do the same thing.
