The chapter opens with the narrator lamenting the fact that he's about to leave for his new job. He doesn't even know what it's like to live without his wife. He's not particularly happy with his current job, but it makes him feel better about his life overall. He meets a guy from his new company who argues that people invent new jobs all the time. The guy argues that the more people invent, the more jobs there are. The narrator thinks that's a pretty good argument. Now he has to decide whether to leave his job for another one. He asks the guy if they can put off getting married until he can figure out everything. He wants to be sure that everything is set up for him and his new wife to live together. He also wants to make sure that they have enough money to live on together.
