"Different Strokes for different Folks" is the title of the chapter. It's a reference to the fact that the narrator's mother broke a bone in a bathtub while nursing her sick child. She's not able to keep the business open because her child has a fever, but she's still able to sell the produce. The narrator wonders why employers don't give raises to workers who do good work. He's also worried about the idea of being alone with a man, since he's afraid he'll get "sexed or something" if he finds himself alone with someone. He doesn't want to be a burden to his employer, so he decides to find a new job.
