This chapter opens with a description of the "escape game" in which the protagonist and his friends try to escape from the "monster" by using a scapegoat to draw the monster's attention away from them. In order to do so, the protagonist has to use the "feather of trouble avoidance" , which means that the bearer of the item does not have to worry about being seen by the monster. The protagonist then tells his friend about how much she means to him, and how she is doing a good thing by helping others. He tells her that he feels like he is a detached person, but now that he has her by his side, he can change himself too. He says that he wants to be like her, and that she is the kindest, most beautiful girl he has ever met. He wishes that she had more experience with reading people, and more experience in knowing people. He adds that humans are not like books, in that they are complicated and good, but that they do not have the same level of understanding as books do.
