This chapter's epigraph comes from the opening lines of the second chapter of the novel, "The Return of the Jedi." In this chapter, we are introduced to the protagonist's brother, who is a member of the Brotherhood. The protagonist is a young man who has just returned from the Crusades in the Holy Land, where he was sent to fight for the Ottoman Empire against the British Empire. He has returned to the United States after a long absence, and he is returning to his homeland because of the unrest in the Middle East. His brother, Brother Alphonse, has been killed in the line of duty, and the protagonist has been sent to the front lines to fight on the side of the Muslim Brotherhood. He is also returning to the battlefield because of his brother's death, but he has been injured in the battle. The Brotherhood has sent him back to Egypt to fight against the Ba'ath, a Muslim sect that has taken over the country's government. The chapter ends with the protagonist explaining that he will return to Egypt with a message from the Brotherhood: "I am returning to my homeland, and I will fight on behalf of the people of Egypt."
