The narrator begins this chapter by telling us that he and his fellow technopriests are 500,000 years old. He tells us that deep space is full of pitfalls, and that there is something more shameful and absurd than all the horrors he's seen. He says that there are thousands of robots in the air, just like ants do in the legend of the marabaunta soldier ants.
