This chapter opens with a discussion between Mr. Lin and Mr. Liu, two professors at the College of Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The professor has just approved the student's proposal to form a combat team. The subject of the combat team is up to the student, but the professor tells him to keep the details a secret from the other students. He tells the student that he just told the professor that it would be difficult for the students to participate in combat without the "test of life" and "death." The professor then tells the students that they will have to bring in only three people to form the team: himself, Gu Ling, and cheng Zhecheng. The students agree to go, and the professor invites them to join him and his brother, First Senior, on a hunt for the mythical winged tiger.
